Episodes 40 would be what I consider Ukitake's first appearance in the tv anime. Although he's appeared on Episode 9 for about 20 seconds, chances are people will not remember who he is. In this episode is a short scene of Kiyone and Sentarou informing Ukitake about the death of Aizen.
